Preseason Practices
Spring training, which allows kids to prepare for the summer swim season, will begin on Monday, April 13 for the older kids (13 and up - could also include very strong 11 and 12 year olds who are already in swimming shape). We start at 2:45pm sharp on Monday, April 13. Try to be on deck by 2:35 or as soon as your school lets out. The younger and newer kids will begin on Sunday, April 19.
Older and more experienced kids will practice three days a week Monday, Wednesday, Friday at the Vandalia Recreation Center Pool. For Mondays and Wednesdays we will begin at 2:45pm and have the pool until 4:30pm. I realize that some kids cannot get there until later due to their school letting out at a later time. That's fine...just get there as soon as possible. On Friday, we have the pool from 3-5pm for this group. Younger and newer kids will practice on Sundays from 1 to 3pm at the Vandalia Rec.
SESSION DATES: This is exactly a 6-week session and runs through Sunday, May 24th (Memorial Day is on the 25th). Older kids will have 18 practices (3 days per week for 6 weeks). Younger and new kids will only have 6 practices (6 Sundays).
If your family has a Vandalia Rec membership, the spring training is 100% free of charge. Otherwise, spring training for the older kids will be $55 for a 6-week Rec Swim Pass. Basically, this is 33 hours of instruction and training for $55. I would wait until this coming Monday to make sure the Rec is ready to distribute passes, but get there asap next week to get your membership card. Tell the front desk you need the pro-rated youth pass for the spring session of swim team.
YOUNGER AND NEW KIDS: You have a decision to make when you go to the Rec Center...whether or not you want to buy the full session pass or just pay as you go (daily memberships are available for youths). You can decide what is best for you.
Also, several parents have been asking about why the time is limited for the younger kids. It's really the best we can offer right now. The pool that we used prior to the Rec (United Theological Seminary - formerly the Jewish Community Center) is closed. We only have the pool during the week until 4:30 and many grade schools don't get out until 3:30. I wish we had more pre-season time with the younger ones, but we simply do not. Sorry about this.
The practices on Mon, Wed, Fri will be much more intense and not for students who have not trained during the winter. They will be comprised of 95% high schoolers, and with only 4 lanes, the younger kids will have little chance of keeping up. We cannot dedicate a lane to younger kids when there are 30 or so high school kids wanting to practice. Sunday practices will be more instructional.
Technically, Fair Valley has nothing to do with this training. The Rec is simply allowing me to train kids during the spring. Anyone with a valid rec pass may join us (if they can keep up).

Note from the Swim Team League Rep
Welcome to the 2009 season for Fair Valley Swim Team. This is intended to provide you with some information regarding open house, sign ups, fees, and what needs to be done before your children can participate.
OPEN HOUSE will be Sunday, May 17th at Fair Valley from 2 until 4. We have had people working very hard this winter and spring in revitalizing the cabin. I have not seen it yet - can't wait to do so - you will find me in the cabin conducting sign ups. We will accommodate suit tryons.
Greg Bergman does intend to conduct practice at the rec center at 1:00. It is my intention to be there at 1:00 as well to help with people who may want to do their sign ups at that location. Kastaway will not be at the rec center with me. I will need to leave by 1:30 to meet the Kastaway rep at the pool.
The infamous YELLOW SHEETS are almost ready to go. If you choose, you may e-mail me the basic information that I need for each child - name, address, phone numbers (all that you have), e-mail addresses, and most importantly your child's BIRTHDATE. I can fill out the yellow sheet, but a parent and the child must sign the sheet. Since I need to coordinate 100+ of these, I will not give them to the child to take home and return later. The variety of folds is more than I can handle. You can catch me the first week of practice to sign the sheets.
Swim team fee this season is $40 a swimmer - $120 family max. This fee will cover the costs of the team shirt for semis and finals, league fees, donuts after meets that we win, team treats after home meets, spirit night expenses and other expenses involved in running a swim team of this size. Our coaches are not paid by the swim club, but by the swim team funds. We will really need for all families to help support the concessions at home meets by providing some items to sell. Another choice would be a buy out fee. I will be talking with our older kids to provide baked goods or something that they can handle. We really need for concessions to be successful. Nice weather on these evenings is a requirement - help me out with this!!!!!
Unlike other sporting events that you may attend, swim meets are run by parent volunteers. Our team can not participate in a meet if we do not have parents to work the meet. Many of you have been incredibly generous with your time and I thank you in advance for this effort. I need for every family to commit to at least 2 jobs during the season. For example - you can be a timer at 2 meets, or you can work concessions at 2 home meets. Your kids will not be able to participate in a meet without this commitment. It was too crazy last year trying to recruit people at the last minute. I also don't want to parents of the older swimmers to miss out on some of the job opportunities. You can respond with your request or sign up at open house. The Bullpen job is especially attractive. If you hestitate from volunteering for this job because you do not know the kids a suggestion would be to work the middle or last third of the meet and shadow the pros who work the beginning of the meet. They can help you meet the kids.
Those who work at every meet are still welcome to do so. Those of you who do this for us are awesome. We love you and we all really hope you keep volunteering.
We do not have very many parents qualified to do the officiating jobs. Cheryl's youngest child is 18 and my youngest is 17. If you are interested in an officiating position, there will be an officials clinic on Thursday, June 4th at Woodhaven from 6:30-8:30. It will be conducted by Steve Rohr from 4 Seasons. He does a great job. There is not expense and in the GDSA you do not have to officially be certified.

The coach is responsible for the team members during swim team activities. Proper discipline will be enforced during practices and swim meets.
Team members are expected to attend all practices and time trials unless they have a valid excuse.
The coach will make all decisions as to who shall be entered in events in swim meets. If a swimmer has a question regarding the coach's decision, it should be discussed with the coach.
Awards are presented during and at the end of the season. A picnic is held at the end of the season when awards are presented.
It is the swimmer's responsibility to stay informed and to know where, when, and which event(s) they are swimming. Please consult the bulletin boards for this information.
Swim team members are expected to follow the rules for the pool and the park and take care of the equipment that is used.
